5 Beauty Tips I Wish I Could Tell My Younger Self

5 Beauty Tips I Wish I Could Tell My Younger Self

Tina Mattern shares 5 beauty tips for healthy skin after 30 years in the beauty industry

When it comes to beauty tips for healthy skin, after more than 30 years in the beauty industry, I’ve learned a lot about skincare, makeup—and perhaps most importantly, how our relationship with beauty changes as we get older.

I’ve watched countless beauty trends come and go. I’ve tried more products than I could ever remember. And over the years, I’ve learned that some of the best beauty advice is actually the simplest.

If I could sit down with my younger self today, pour us each a cup of coffee, and give her a little beauty advice, these are the five things I would tell her.

1. Wear the Sunscreen. Every Day.

Seriously.

If I could give my younger self just one skincare tip, this might be it.

When we’re younger, it’s easy to think of sunscreen as something we use at the beach or by the pool. But protecting your skin from UV exposure is important every day of the year—not just during summer.

Make SPF the final step of your morning skincare routine, whether it’s sunny, cloudy, hot, or cold.

It’s one of those habits your future skin will be very happy you started.

2. Don’t Wait for Wrinkles to Start Taking Care of Your Skin

One of the most important beauty tips for healthy skin is to start taking care of it before you’re trying to correct something you already see.

It’s about caring for the skin you have right now.

You don’t need an elaborate routine. Start with the fundamentals:

Cleanse. Treat. Moisturize. Protect.

As your skin changes, your skincare can change with it.

Ingredients such as Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, and retinol can each serve different purposes in a well-rounded skincare routine.

The key isn’t using everything at once.

It’s understanding what your skin needs and being consistent.

3. More Skincare Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Better Skin

Oh, the money I could have saved myself over the years! 😉

There is always going to be another new beauty product promising to transform your skin.

That doesn’t mean you need all of them.

Layering product after product can make skincare unnecessarily complicated—and sometimes makes it difficult to figure out which products your skin actually likes.

I’ve become a big believer in building a routine around a few products that have a purpose.

A good cleanser.

A targeted serum.

Moisture when your skin needs it.

And SPF during the day.

A simple routine you consistently follow is far more valuable than a complicated routine you don’t.

4. Your Skincare Doesn’t Stop at Your Jawline

Here’s one I wish more women learned earlier.

When you’re applying your skincare, don’t forget your neck and décolleté.

We spend so much time taking care of our faces and then stop right at the jawline.

When appropriate for the product you’re using, extend your skincare down onto your neck and upper chest. And don’t forget sun protection on these exposed areas either.

Your face isn’t the only skin that deserves your attention.

5. Stop Chasing “Perfect” Skin

Of all my beauty tips for healthy skin, this might be the lesson I feel most strongly about today.

Real skin has texture.

We smile. We laugh. We make expressions. We live our lives. And yes—we get older.

I don’t believe the goal of skincare should be trying to look 25 forever.

The goal is to care for your skin, help it look and feel its best, and feel confident at whatever age you happen to be.

There is an enormous difference between wanting to take care of yourself and believing you have to erase every line or imperfection to be beautiful.

You don’t.

My Beauty Tips for Healthy Skin After 30+ Years in Beauty

After all these years, I’ve realized that the best beauty tips for healthy skin aren’t about following every trend.

It’s about learning what works for you.

Take care of your skin. Wear your sunscreen. Find products you enjoy using. Be consistent.

But don’t become so focused on fixing yourself that you forget to enjoy yourself.

And if I could tell my younger self one final thing, it would be this:

You’re going to spend far too much time worrying about things nobody else even notices. Enjoy yourself. You’re beautiful.
